Delete key not working on Mac files?

Nothing is broken: Finder requires Command–Delete to move a selected file to the Trash. SADFinder lets the Delete key perform that action directly and keeps permanent deletion behind a separate shortcut and confirmation.

Quick answer

Nothing is broken: Finder requires Command–Delete to move a selected file to the Trash. SADFinder lets the Delete key perform that action directly and keeps permanent deletion behind a separate shortcut and confirmation.

Move a file to the Trash in Finder

  1. Select one or more items

Click the files or use Command-click to select multiple items.

  2. Press Command–Delete

Finder moves the selection to the Trash.

  3. Undo if needed

Press Command–Z immediately to reverse the move when Finder still has it in its undo history.

Why does the Delete key seem to do nothing?

On many Mac keyboards, the key labeled Delete behaves like Backspace while typing. Finder deliberately requires a modifier for moving files to the Trash, which reduces accidental deletion.

Apple lists Command–Delete as the Finder shortcut for moving the selected item to the Trash. Emptying the Trash is a separate Shift–Command–Delete action.

Use Delete like a file-manager key

In SADFinder, Delete moves the selected items to the Trash. Permanent deletion uses Cmd+Delete and a confirmation, so the dangerous operation remains distinct.

Undo and redo cover trash, move, copy, rename, and new-folder operations, giving you a safety net after common file actions.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my Mac Delete key delete a file?

Finder does not assign the unmodified Delete key to files. Select the item and press Command–Delete to send it to the Trash.

Can I undo moving a file to Trash?

Often yes. Press Command–Z immediately after the action. If that is no longer available, open the Trash and move the item back manually.

Does SADFinder permanently delete with one key?

No. Delete moves items to the Trash. Permanent deletion is a separate Command–Delete action with confirmation.
